What Job Path Are You On?

What kind of career path are you interested in? There seems to be two schools of thought. The first one
believes that jobs flow from education and degrees. A person sets out on a path to become something
and follows a pre-determined plan to reach a destination. That destination could be a doctor or
lawyer, a teacher or an engineer. The second school of thought is more free-flowing. You figure out what
interests you and take a job or internship to gain experience. Maybe theres a class or certificate for a
specific skill, but its not a degree program. Maybe you find a business mentor and start your side
hustle and that turns into a full-time business. The path is not set but you follow where it leads and keep
pressing into opportunities that come your way.

Two Paths

Between these two ways of walking towards a career, there’s no right or wrong answer. The path you
choose is up to you and based on your personality, opportunities, support system, and what seems
achievable to you. So what type of person are you? Do you thrive with more structure or enjoy a sea of
possibilities? Are you a student who wants a degree or are you an entrepreneur? Do you feel like one
type? Is your heart tugging you into something else?

My Next Move

Again, there is no wrong answer, only paths that will help you achieve your goals. The American Job Center
has a landing page called “My Next Move” that can help you determine the best path toward your next opportunity.
Once you know where you want to go, the question is how do you get there? The University of Hawaii Maui
College has traditional degree programs, but they also have training and certificate programs to help
you get started in whatever field you want. It’s a great way to gain a boost of confidence so that when you are
ready to look for a job you have a resume that shows that you are a serious candidate.

Are you Ready?

As the Roman philosopher, Seneca once said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets
opportunity.” The preparation you do now will ensure you’re ready for the future opportunities that will
inevitably come your way. If you’re not ready, the opportunity will feel like a huge letdown instead of
the life-changing win that it was supposed to be. In conclusion, take the quiz and determine your path.
In conclusion, talk to a counselor at UHMC and start with a certificate or training program. Be ready when your dream job opens up.
