Job Description
OVERVIEW
Pono Pacific Land Management, LLC was founded with a vision of helping Hawai‘i’s conservation agencies and landowners. Since 2000, we have been providing specialized services to a wide variety of clients in almost every ecosystem in Hawaiʻi, including:
- Native habitat restoration and landscape maintenance
- Invasive species eradication
- Ungulate-proof/predator-proof fence construction
- Predator and ungulate control
- Trail construction & maintenance
We are currently seeking applicants for the Field Worker I position on Maui. A Field Worker I carries out general conservation field work under close supervision by a Field Supervisor and/or Project Manager. The ideal candidate will exhibit the values that steer our organization: character, humility, ʻohana (family/community-mindedness), service, excellence, and nobility. A Field Worker I will act in the best interest of the company, act in the best interest of other employees, and act in a fair, safe, effective, and legal manner.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- Reliable vehicle or other reliable form of transportation
- Ability to read, write, and understand (English) equipment and product labels for safety
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn
- Follow directions while working in small groups or independently
- Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality
- Maintain excellent communication, verbal and written (English)
- Willing and able to perform physically challenging work in harsh conditions for 8-10 hours a day
- Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds
- Ability to safely handle, mix, and apply herbicide, following instructions and/or product labels
- Ability to camp in remote areas for multiple days at a time and/or travel occasionally
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Fence construction experience
- Tree felling experience
- Interest in preserving Hawaiʻi’s native plants, animals, and ecosystems
- Familiarity with both native and invasive species identification
- Familiarity operating power tools such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, etc.
- State of Hawaiʻi Pesticide Applicator license
- Experience operating/working with machinery (excavator, skid steer, etc.)
- Helicopter (passenger) experience
SCHEDULE
Part-time to start (dependent upon weather, project/crew availability). This position requires a flexible schedule, such as the ability to work 1-2+ weeks at a time and be down from work for similar times. Building the appropriate crew could lead to full-time work (we have the work, need the crew/leadership ability to run consistently).
COMPENSATION
Depends on experience/qualifications and project (minimum starting: $18 per hour)
